Pat Rabbitte has resigned as leader of the Labour Party and is possibly going to be succeeded by Eamon Gilmore. Ronan Mullen is a sitting senator in Leinster House.
What do they all have in common?
They have all been past presidents of the UCG Student’s Union.
Join to the list Daithi MacCarthaigh, who has run for the Seanad twice and who was SU President in the early 90s as well, if I am not mistaken and there appears to be a trend breaking out.
Of course, Michael D. Higgins set up the Political Discussion Society in UCG, when he was a student (I was auditor of the Society for a year) and you begin to see a definite trend.
Now, if I could only work out what it is….

This is amazing for me. I graduated from NUI, Galway in 2000 and our SU presidents were a succession of FG and FF members who used the position to further their own political career. It saddened me to see how Animal Fram was happening before my eyes. The student revolution was needed, and i am sure that the first swathe of SU presidents were radical and in touch with the student community. By the time i arrived they were the establishment.
I won’t rant on. But it is interesting to see how the SU moved from being left dominated in the poverty stricken 80’s, to being right-dominated in the wealthy 90’s.
BTW, the PDS was great.
James,
I read this in Harry McGee’s blog (http://www.harrymcgee.com/). It is another take on political hotbeds.
“Gilmore is one of six Oireachtas members from Catlra and Ahascragh [County Galway]: the three Kitt siblings; Ronan Mullen and Mary Harney who was also born there”
Ahascragh :- the nursery of Irish politics, by all accounts.
