The big lovely news today is that work will start on T2 in Dublin Airport next week. For anybody that travels through Dublin Airport regularly, this is great news indeed.

I always thought that Heathrow was the most nightmarish airport in the world, but lately Dublin is getting the nod.

I probably take about 30 flights each year and so I feel I almost have a personal relationship with the actual airport. It is a deeply unpleasant experience going through it. I try to take Aer Lingus flights for the automated check-in service, which is a treat.

What I am hoping for is one thing: The new terminal is built for the convenience of the passenger. That is to say, they have thought about the passenger experience as the main decision-making criterion. When there are two ways of doing things…they choose the way that is best for the passenger.

Not the cheapest way.

Not the fastest way.

Not the most architecturally pretty way.

The way that is best for the passenger.

Stansted is a great airport - High ceilings, fresh air all the time, lots of space and lots of seats and waiting areas.

Denver Airport (pictured on the right) is probably the prettiest. It looks like a native American village of tepees.

Charles de Gaulle Airport is pretty cool. I can understand why U2 used it for their beautiful Day video.

Dublin Airport has no waiting areas at all as far as I can see. You have to go either into a bar or a restaurant area for seating.

So, bring on T2.
