Here are my rants of today for people that need to do some joined-up thinking.
People crying over the driving test waiting times being so long and then failing three times, thereby making the queue longer.
People crying out for jail sentences for the paparazzi on the day Diana died and then buying The Sun newspaper the day after because they had the best photos.
People saying they want top class cancer care services but they want at least 64 centres of excellence, two for each county.
People saying they want tax cuts but also better services.
People being furious over death on the roads and then furious when they are given two penalty points for speeding.
People shaking their heads in disbelief at how the crime rate is so high and drug gang murders are out of control, but they still do a few lines of coke at the weekend.
People completely in opposition to the legalisation of cannabis, “because it will be end of humanity” but are shocked at drink-fuelled violence on a Saturday night on O’Connell Street.
I have views on all these issues and although I hold opinions on the issues themselves, I can see how my opinions are not universal. Nonetheless, the important thing people need to start doing is to consider problems in totality, not just the thing that is in front of their eyes and is causing them to be cross.
It would be considered very un-PC to criticise a protest group in a town in Ireland where people are campaigning to retain cancer care facilities. How could you criticise that? Well, if it is preventing the creation of centres of excellence, then it should be resoundingly criticised. For years, county councillors protested against the centres of excellence model and even now, there is opposition. There is a big picture out there and it is a multi-coloured picture, not one that is black and white.
Rant over.

I take it from your comment, you are implying that I am one of those people. You might like to elaborate?
Given that your a lecturer/researcher in Ireland, which puts you well above the current standard of life of the majority of people in the world, I’d expect you to be fairly intelligent and well to do.
If they bother you so much then you have the option to choose to go out and help them instead of wording up a rant blog about them.
It’s a lot more hassle and stressful though.
OK Paul, you have chosen to be rude and you are the first commenter on this blog that has chosen to do so. So, here is my answer.
First of all, can I not write a blog? Is my position as a member of any particular profession supposed to preclude me from writing a blog?
Secondly, where is your evidence that I don’t do more than simply writing and ranting? As for calling this a rant blog, I doubt that many people apart from yourself would call this a ‘rant blog’.
You have just exemplified the issue I raised - going ahead with your half-baked opinion without knowing any of the facts. Your two comments are patronising (”I’d expect you to be fairly intelligent”) and ill-informed.
By the way. What does “the current standard of life” mean?
You seem to have issues that I doubt I could help with.
I’ve obviously offended so I’ll drop the issue. I mistook what you meant by “Here are my rants of today” and I don’t want to cause you further offence so I’ll leave you to it. Best of luck with your future blogging.
Hmm, Im feeling pedantic today so…
I believe the country’s finances to be generally mismanaged, so I would view the issue of better services to be an administrative problem rather than a lack of finance. Therefore I wouldn’t have an issue with people wanting tax cuts.
The rest are spot on though.
