First of all, I know nothing about the Lisbon treaty. I would normally be interested in this kind of thing, but my mind has been elsewhere of late. However, I was listening to Pat Kenny this morning and he had some people on it that were talking about it.

Essentially, the argument against the treaty ranges from “We don’t really know what it is about” to “We are giving away all control of our country to the bureaucrats”

So, trying to think rationally about these arguments against it it strikes me that the first argument is a nonsense. If you don’t know what it is about, then it makes sense that you would not vote. Don’t make a decision from the perspective of being ignorant. You should only make decisions on the basis of knowledge and fact. It is definitely not good enough to make a decision to vote NO simply because you feel this is the better option when you don’t really know what the better option is. It is arguable that when you don’t know the facts and you have a decision to make that all decisions are equally likely to be the best one. So, the first argument, which is not really an argument, really is pretty stupid.

The second argument that we will be giving away all our decisions to the EU is basically ridiculous as well. WE ALREADY MAKE ONLY A FRACTION OF THE DECISIONS THAT AFFECT US.

We don’t decide bank interest rates. We don’t decide the value of our currency and its rate of exchange with other currencies. We don’t decide that we would like IBM/HP/Wyeth etc. to come and invest in our country. We don’t DECIDE whether we will have a healthy economy or not. We compete and we compete and we compete and we compete. And we deal with the situations as they arise and we adapt and we move forward as best we can.

So, the second argument is another total nonsense.

I haven’t read the treaty yet - it is 310 pages in length, so I might not read it - however, I really need to hear a good argument about it. But, so far the NO campaign does not impress me in the slightest. I’m not saying they won’t impress me in the future, but right now, it sounds like a load of baloney.
