So, I’m back from Colombia, where indeed, I did have a very good time. The meeting went very well and I think there will be a few productive collaborations as a result.
I didn’t do too much of the tourist thing - not really that easy for such a short trip, though I did get driven over the Andes to Santa Fé de Antioquia for a day trip.
On my last day and on request - initially from one of my students here in Maynooth - I asked my hosts to bring me to see the grave of Pablo Escobar. So, this photo is me standing at the grave of one of the most evil men to have ever lived on this planet.
My verdict on colombia is to go there and visit - it is a very nice place.

I’m in the middle of an email discussion with someone who is normally pretty sensible. However,I can’t seem to persuade him that these guys……http://www.icr.org/ are not scientists. He’s convinced that they are.
Any suggestions?
Hi RTS. This is a case of ‘It will become science if we say it often enough’.
The scientific method means generating hypotheses and testing them. Then whatever hypothesis is left standing at the end - supported by empirical evidence and not by bias or supposition - is the one we prefer.
Do beetles appear in bags of flour because of spontaneous generation or by getting in to the bag some other way? Lets test it out.
The Institute of Creation Science people just take mainstream science and put weird conclusions on to it and call this research. It is no science and nothing near science.
I don’t know what else to say about it. I hope your friend doesn’t remain in the dark about these jokers - I don’t believe they do any good to religious movements either.
When I asked him for the evidence to back up their claims he wrote this;
“It would do no good to show you anything. Your
responses are usually rhetoric and insult my efforts.
The information is there for those that able to see
it. As I have said before, it is a subject that
cannot be defined by cut and paste blurbs from google
searches. It is a subject that must be studied by
reading websites, reading books and publications.
Before beginning one has to understand the basic
definitions of what is being discussed, otherwise it
appears to become a war of words, which it is not.
Fundamentals have to be studied first, meaning one has
to put in the time to find out what each side of the
argument believes in detail and what the scientific
terms mean. Then one can compare point by point the
accuracy the arguments that are made by both sides. If
you ever become willing to do that, perhaps then you
will find something. I have nothing more to say. Have
as great day.”
So,I guess, when you can’t back up what you say, you withdraw and claim victory.
