So, if you have read this blog before, you know that I have a particular liking for using scientific thought in order to come to decisions and conclusions.
Look at all the evidence and decide on the basis of this evidence which decision you are best making.
Don’t use superstition, prejudice or bias and try to remain independent.
I see the Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has come out today and appealed for those who are saying that the Lisbon Treaty is going to change the position of Abortion legislation in Ireland to cease and desist.
He has asked for spurious arguments to be kept out ot the debate.
Now, whatever you think about article 40.3.3, the Lisbon treaty and the Nice Traties before it, specifically state that there is no interference in Ireland’s article 40.3.3 and the law with regard to abortion in Ireland remains unchanged in the event of the Lisbon EU reform treaty being passed by the electorate.
It is good of Archbishop Martin to do this and my suspicion is that his motive is an honourable and reasonable one - if people scaremonger everytime there is a vote, then…well, it is the boy who cried wolf situation.
So, hopefully, whatever the outcome of the vote, it will be based on people voting for reasons that they can explain and for reasons that stand up to scrutiny.
If you are voting no because you thinkk it is unacceptable for there to be a president of the EU that is not directly elected, then that is an honourable stance to take. If you vote yes because you feel that the fundamental charter of human rights needs to be enshrined in law, then that is an honourable stance to take.
If however, some clown has told you that you need to vote one way or another because this treaty introduces abortion by the back door or because if you don’t understand it, you should vote no or because voting yes will make you more attractive to women, then that will be a sad day.
Tomorrow, I will post again on the Lisbon Treaty and on how I am going to vote and why I am going to vote that way.
