I find myself rushing around a lot these days. Not like when I was a student and things were a little calmer and I could take things a little slower.
From my student days I remember spending hours in the canteen in UCG - not spending money or anything, just sitting there and talking. If I did any work, it was to study, which again involved a lot of calm-time. I did play some football and that kind of thing, but on the whole, it was a pretty quiet time compared to now, with very little to do but sit and think.
And listen to Pink Floyd.
I listened to Pink Floyd almost every day for a few years. Mostly The Wall, but also Dark Side of the Moon and About Face and maybe a few more albums (yes, I know About Face wasn’t a Floyd album).
I haven’t had the chance to listen to Pink Floyd much in recent years. It’s a kind of music that isn’t all that good for listening to in the car - something about how you actually need to sit down and do nothing else but listen to it.
I guess you can tell that I liked listening to Pink Floyd. Well, I did and they remain a band that I associate with undergraduate life in college.
So, I’m sorry to hear that Rick Wright has died. I guess I still think of the Floyd as being young men in their twenties, but he was 65. He was a self-taught keyboard player, which I think is rather difficult to do and he did some lovely playing on Us and Them and The Great Gig in the Sky.
Some of the best Floyd songs, for sure.
