Went to see Nitin Sawhney playing last night in TriPod. I have wanted to see him play for years. I got his “Broken Skin” album some years ago and it is perhaps one of the most perfect albums ever. It is loaded with references to the conflict between Pakistan and India and messages against war, against prejudice, against violence towards immigrants and this is all wrapped up in some of the most fantastic melodies you can imagine.
Well, Nitin has a new album out called Londer Undersound and again, themes of intolerance and misunderstanding of other cultures are to be found.
I have been looking for a good YouTube video of one of his new songs, which I think is an instant classic. It is called Days of Fire and it relates to the shooting of John Charles de Menzes on the London Underground. The singing is done by Natty and Nitin is playing the guitar on the video. The quality is crap, but this was on the BBC last week as part of their Electric Proms thingie.
Nitin Sawhney - go buy his music.
