Well, I’m back in Snowmass Colorado at Rocky08 - the satellite meeting of the ISMB. I’m speaking in about 2 hours. Some really good talks so far. Jack Horner gave a talk yesterday where he did some analysis of the VIOXX data. VIOXX was withdrawn from the market in 2004 amid concerns that it was causing a 4-fold increase in death among its users (in a cohort of people with very bad coronary heart disease). According to Jack, the data doesn’t support a 2-fold increase in death among its takers. I wonder if Merck would pull the drug if this was the increased risk factor? Would you take VIOXX if you thought it would keep you alive or alternatively it would double your chances of death. The alternative is not to take anything and suffer CHD. Interesting thought.Irrespective, VIOXX was doomed over the bad publicity and is probably not viable, even if it was reintroduced.Kirk Jordan of IBM is to give a talk today on IBMs ideas about the future of computing. Always a good talk. His talk last year was the best at the meeting. He was talking about their 7-core (8-core really) chips and the future of multi-core processors. This mornings talks look good. Some systems biology stuff, some modelling of molecular evolution and some metabolic evolution stuff. All very interesting for me.I’m going to be talking about our work on the origin of the eukaryotic cell (eukaryotic nucleus). OK, its starting. Gotta go.Oh yeah, today I got invited to speak in Germany in 2009. And got a paper rejected yesterday from one of the big journals. Bummer.
